Sawdust and Paint Samples
I bought my first apartment this year.
I always assumed buying an apartment was a much longer process. I imagined going to countless viewings, comparing different places, overthinking every little detail, and eventually (maybe) finding the right one.
Instead, I bought the first apartment I saw, LOL.
I think one of the reasons I ended up choosing it was simply how it felt when I walked through the door. It was cozy, and I generally got a good vibe from the place. Plus, a really nice balcony and otherwise huge potential! The apartment definitely needed, and still needs, a lot of work. But there was just something about it that felt charming. Something I could see myself making into a home.
And perhaps most importantly, it’s only about five minutes away from my family and work.
I’ve always been quite a homebody, so knowing that my family is close by is comforting. Especially now that I’m living away from home “properly” for the first time. Having them nearby makes this new chapter feel a little less intimidating.
There are many things I’d like to change in this new place, but I’m trying to take it one project at a time. Renovating an entire apartment is expensive, and I’d much rather take my time than rush everything just to get it finished. I’m also trying to do as much as I can myself, and I am so lucky to get a lot of help from family and friends when I need it. It makes the whole process much more affordable, and honestly, much more fun.
Right now, we’re in the middle of sanding and refinishing the floors, which has turned out to be slightly more complicated and time-consuming than we originally thought. Apparently, fixing an old floor isn’t quite as simple as it looks.
But that’s part of the fun, I guess.
It’s exciting to slowly see the apartment change. And one of my favorite things about having my own place is that I get to decide what it becomes. I can paint the walls whatever color I want and change things when I get bored. The bedroom is already a beautiful green, and I’m planning to paint the living room a dusty pink.
I have always been really inspired by English traditional interior styles. I’m imagining a warm, colorful and nostalgic style with classic details, different patterns, vintage furniture, layers of textiles, built-in bookshelves and other personal touches like photographs. Elegant yet cozy and playful, with gold details, vintage touches, plants and flowers.
I’m sure my ideas will change about a hundred times along the way, and I’m completely fine with that.
Because as much as I’m looking forward to having the apartment finished, I’m starting to realise that I actually enjoy the process too. Choosing colours, figuring out what works, doing little DIY projects, finding furniture, changing my mind, and occasionally wondering what on earth I’ve gotten myself into.
For now, it’s a work in progress in the most literal sense. Sawdust in the hallway, paint samples on the wall, and me, slowly figuring out what I actually like.
