Finding Your Place in the World

Hi readers,

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to find your place in the world. About where we thought we would be by now, the expectations we have for ourselves, and what happens when life doesn’t quite turn out the way we imagined.

I think this is one of those things I’m writing about partly for myself, too. I have my own expectations and ideas about what my life would look like, and sometimes it’s difficult not to feel like I should have achieved more by now. Like I should be further along or feel more certain about where I’m heading.

And I have a feeling I’m not the only one who feels this way.

It can be surprisingly lonely to feel like you’re still figuring things out while everyone around you seems to be moving forward. We don’t always talk about the uncertainty or the pressure we put on ourselves to become the people we thought we would be by now.

When Life Looks Different Than You Expected

Maybe you thought you’d be further along in your career by now. Maybe you imagined yourself living somewhere else, doing something completely different, or feeling more settled in who you are.

It’s difficult not to compare yourself to others when it seems like everyone is reaching milestones you haven’t reached yourself. We see people getting their dream jobs, buying homes and travelling the world, and it can leave us wondering whether we’re doing enough with our own lives.

But we rarely see the whole picture. And even if someone else really is exactly where they want to be, it doesn’t mean we’re supposed to be there, too.

I think we sometimes forget that life doesn’t have to look a certain way by a certain age. Still, it’s hard not to measure ourselves against the expectations we’ve had for so long.

Learning to Accept Where You Are

I think there’s something important about learning to accept the season of life you’re in, even when it isn’t quite the one you hoped for.

I’m trying to remind myself that there’s a difference between accepting where I am and being completely happy with it. I can acknowledge that my life looks different from what I imagined, without treating that as a reason to be disappointed in myself every day.

Sometimes, life is messy. You might feel stuck, uncertain or unsure of what comes next. You might need more time than you expected to figure things out, and that’s okay.

Being uncertain about your future doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It simply means you’re still working things out.

You’re allowed to change your mind, take a different path or realise that something you once wanted no longer feels right for you.

You Can Always Begin Again

Accepting where you are doesn’t mean you have to stay there forever.

Of course, knowing that things can change and actually feeling comfortable with change are two very different things. It’s one thing to imagine doing something different, but another to step outside what feels familiar.

We want to know that we’ll be okay. That we’ll have something to fall back on if things don’t work out the way we hoped. Sometimes, we wait until we feel ready or until the circumstances seem right before we dare to take that first step.

And honestly, I understand that. Change can be frightening, especially when you don’t know what’s waiting for you on the other side.

But adulthood doesn’t always come with the sense of security we wish for. There isn’t always a clear plan or a guarantee that everything will work out. Sometimes, we have to make decisions without knowing exactly where they’ll lead us.

I think this is where things get complicated. You can want something to change and still feel scared of what that change might bring. You can know that you’re not entirely happy with where you are, while also finding comfort in what’s familiar. And when you don’t know what comes next, it can feel easier to stay where you are, even if part of you wishes things were different.

That doesn’t mean we have to change everything overnight. We can take small steps, think things through and give ourselves time to build confidence along the way.

Maybe We’re All Still Figuring It Out

Maybe finding your place in the world takes longer than we expect. Maybe it involves trying things, changing our minds and slowly figuring out what feels right for us. And maybe we don’t have to know exactly where we’re going just yet.

It’s easy to look at where you are and focus on everything you thought you would have achieved by now. I know I do that sometimes. But I’m trying to remember that not having everything I hoped for doesn’t mean I’ve done nothing, or that things can’t still change.

I suppose part of growing up is learning to live with the fact that we can’t plan everything. We can make choices, work towards the things we want and try to build a life that feels right for us, but there will always be things we can’t predict.

And perhaps that’s something we all have to figure out in our own time.

I don’t think we need to have everything sorted out to be moving forward. Sometimes, we’re making progress without even realising it. Other times, we might need to stop, reconsider what we want and take a different direction.

I suppose these are just some thoughts I’ve been carrying around lately, and I wanted to put them into words. Maybe I’ll look back on them differently in a few years.

Until next time, ♡
